How to Create a Study Plan: A Step-by-Step Guide

Modified on Tue, 29 Aug, 2023 at 11:13 AM

Step 1: Assess Your Commitments and Goals

  • Identify Your Goals - clearly define your academic goals and what you want to achieve from your postgraduate studies.

  • List Your Commitments - make a list of your work shifts, personal obligations, and any other commitments that are non-negotiable.

Step 2: Calculate Available Study Time

  • Determine Free Time - subtract your commitments from the total hours in a week to calculate the time you have available for studying.

  • Identify Peak Hours - identify when you're most alert and focused during the day, as these are the ideal times for studying complex or challenging subjects.

Step 3: Break Down the Module’s Tasks

  • Divide Tasks - break down all the things you have to do in the module including regular posts in the Academic Forum, work required for your Module Activity, weekly posts in your Reflective Journal, and revision for the end-of-module Exam (where applicable, depending on what subject you are studying).  This makes it easier to allocate study time to specific areas.

  • Set Priorities - identify which tasks require more time and focus and when work is due. For example, during the module you are required to make regular contentions to the Academic Forum and Reflective Journal, but the submission deadline for your Module Activity is at the end of the module, and the exam is opened in the last week of the module.

Step 4: Allocate Study Blocks

  • Use Time Blocks - divide your available study time into blocks, typically 25 to 45 minutes each (Pomodoro technique), followed by a short break.

  • Distribute Tasks - assign specific tasks to each study block. Rotate between tasks to keep your learning varied.

Step 5: Plan Breaks and Rewards

  • Include Breaks - schedule short breaks between study blocks to recharge your mind. These breaks can help maintain focus and prevent burnout.

  • Set Rewards - allocate longer breaks or small rewards after completing a certain number of study blocks to keep yourself motivated.

Step 6: Review and Adjust

  • Regularly Review: Periodically review your study plan to ensure it aligns with your goals and commitments. Adjust as needed based on your progress and changing circumstances.

  • Be Flexible: Life can be unpredictable. Be prepared to adapt your study plan if unexpected events arise.

Step 7: Utilise Technology for Organisation

  • Task Management Apps: Consider using apps like Todoist or Any.do to create to-do lists and track your tasks.

Remember, your study plan should be a flexible tool that helps you maintain a healthy balance between your studies, work, and personal life. By following these steps, you will be able to create a well-structured study plan that makes best use of time and enhances your learning experience.
