If you wish to learn more about the structure of our USW MSc programmes, please refer to the information below.
The MSc consists of 2 modules. Module 1 is a multidisciplinary module that is 10 weeks in duration. It will focus on research methodologies and critical appraisal which will give you all the tools you need to complete a professional research project. In Module 2, you will complete a Professional Project over 28 weeks. The Professional Project is a 10,500-word dissertation on a subject related to your clinical practice.
Module 1:
Over the course of this module, you will need to complete the following tasks:
The Academic Forum - In the Academic Forum, you will discuss clinical case scenarios and write well-referenced, scientifically written postings, commentating, and critically analysing the literature. Postings should reflect your thoughts and ideas about the subject in your own words after reading the relevant literature. You should aim to write a minimum of 4 posts a week.
Your Reflective Journal - You will use this to reflect on your personal progress each week of the module. It is an academic piece of work that should focus on what you have taken from the module and how it will affect your practice in the future.
A Module Activity - Students will be expected to complete a module activity on a set topic by the end of the module. This will be either an individual or a group activity. When completing a group project the group will be given a specific task to accomplish over the 10 weeks of the module. The elected group leader will coordinate the project, apportion work to individuals, collate, and submit the completed work.
The End-of-Module Exam - At the end of the module, you will complete a 1.5-hour online examination based around the topics covered during the module.
Module 2:
This is designed to enable you to study a clinically related issue in greater depth relating to your subject. Your primary source of communication throughout Module 2 will be the Student-Tutor Communication Log which is a forum where you and your tutor will discuss and develop your Proposal and your Professional Project. You will be encouraged to regularly post work into the forum so that your tutor can review and give feedback on your progress.
Within the first 8 weeks of the course, you will need to put forward a 1,500-word proposal to your tutor and make an application for Ethical Approval for your work. Once this proposal has been accepted, you will complete a Professional Project of 10,500 words.
The Professional Project must be related to your subject and be relevant to your practice.
It may comprise of:
Literature review and appraisal of evidence.
Audit of practice, including organisational or clinical.
Review and implementation of evidence-based practice.
Qualitative or quantitative research (formal research involving human subjects is not anticipated).
Case(s)-based and quality of service review with critical appraisal.
